Construction Update for Lake Merced Golf Club Site

Beginning as early as Tuesday, December 1, construction activities will increase at the Lake Merced Golf Club Project Site to start building a new well facility. This work will occur Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. and intermittently on Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

During well facility construction, there will be an increase in construction deliveries and traffic.The SFPUC and its contractors will work to minimize noise, dust and traffic impacts, but some disruptions are expected due to the nature of construction. Every effort will be made to keep these impacts to a minimum.

In January 2015, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) awarded the $42.9 million construction contract for the Regional Groundwater Storage and Recovery Project to Ranger Pipelines, Inc. This Project started pre-construction activities in Spring 2015 and anticipates completion in early 2018. Construction activities at the Lake Merced Golf Club started in September 2015.

Construction Notice: Regional Groundwater Project to Begin 24-hour Well Drilling in Colma

On Monday, August 10, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission's (SFPUC) Regional Groundwater Storage and Recovery (GSR) Project will begin preparing the Colma Boulevard site for construction activities. Beginning as early as Monday, August 17, the GSR Project will begin drilling a new groundwater well that will be 690 feet deep near Colma Boulevard in Colma. Please reference the map below for the exact location.

24-hour well drilling work near Colma Boulevard anticipates starting on  

Monday, August 17 inside the blue rectangle pictured above. 

Once well drilling begins, work will occur continuously for 24-hours a day for up to one month in duration. To minimize noise impacts, the contractor will monitor noise levels and install sound blankets to ensure the levels do not exceed the local noise ordinance.  During night work, the contractor will rotate construction lighting to direct it away from properties near well drilling activities. 

GSR Project Construction Activities Ramp-up this Week

The Regional Groundwater Storage and Recovery (GSR) Project will ramp-up construction activities inside the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission’s (SFPUC)’s right of way in South San Francisco this week.

• The contractor will begin well redevelopment work on Monday, May 18, increasing activity at this site for approximately two weeks. 
• Permitted construction hours for this work are currently Monday through Sunday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
• Expect to see more construction vehicles accessing the site via South Spruce Avenue. Also there may be some dust and noise associated with construction activities.

Hickey Boulevard & Camaritas Avenue in South San Francisco

• The contractor will begin well redevelopment work on Thursday, May 28, increasing activity at this site for approximately two weeks.
• Permitted construction hours are currently Monday through Sunday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. 
• Expect to see more construction vehicles accessing the site via Camaritas Avenue. There may be some dust and noise associated with construction activities.

The WSIP Turns 10!

This year the Water System Improvement Program (WSIP) turns 10! One of the largest infrastructure projects in the nation, the WSIP is repairing, replacing and upgrading our aging water infrastructure to ensure we can deliver water to customers following an earthquake. We’ve gotten a little nostalgic about how far we’ve come in the last 10 years, and we would like to share this video with you.



Now 80 percent complete, the WSIP has already provided increased reliability to the water supply for customers as a result of the completion of some of the program’s major projects. The program has created over 6 million construction craft hours to date, employing more than 11,000 workers since 2007. Nearly half of those workers live in our four-county service area.

Groundwater Treatment Facility, Where and Why

Groundwater treatment and water containment are important parts of this project. Water containment was anticipated during the project planning process. The EIR describes the South Shaft Area as being used for activities including “construction worker parking, offices in temporary trailers, equipment repair shop(s), materials storage, muck stockpiling, water containment structures, and equipment deliveries.”

As a reminder, SFPUC does not dictate means and methods the contractor should use. In this case, the contractor’s site layout resulted in the current upper level location of the water containment structures. The level of water in the treatment ponds will depend on the rate of inflow into project excavations and the time required for treatment prior to discharge. Of course, they will be removed at the end of the project.
