Be A Local Water Hero This April!

In the event of an earthquake, will you have enough drinking water?

The 107th anniversary of the devastating 1906 earthquake is coming up on Thursday, April 18th. 

This April, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) encourages all Bay Area residents and business leaders to take the time to discuss plans, supplies and ideas with your family and community to ready your home or office for an emergency or catastrophic event.

Be a Local Hero Contest!

This April, we want to know your tips for emergency preparedness and any precautions you and your family or office have taken to be prepared for an earthquake or natural disaster.

Tweet us @WSIPInTheNews between April 8 and 12, and let us know what you're doing to be a local water hero by demonstrating (via photo) or sharing your own tips. Participants will receive a pen and certificate. 

We'll retweet some of your tips during the week of April 15, but are encouraging your participation all month long. All cities and residents are eligible for a certificate by tweeting us your tip or showing how your city, home or office is a local hero.

The Harry Tracy Water Treatment Plant project will conduct four intensive, one-day concrete “placement activities” to create the base slab for the new 11 million gallon treated water reservoir. These placement activities require a large number of trucks to travel along Crystal Springs Road in San Bruno. Pilot cars will regulate the speed and number of trucks entering and exiting the plant gate.

These concrete “placement activities” will require a large number of trucks to travel along Crystal Springs Road in San Bruno to create the base slab for the new 11 million gallon Treated Water Reservoir. Pilot cars will regulate the speed and number of trucks entering and exiting the plant gate.

Work hours: 7:00am until at least 7:00pm

Long work days are necessary to ensure the concrete base slab has adequate time to dry in current weather conditions.

Extended Hours and Trucking for Concrete Pours in April



Concrete placement at Harry Tracy Water Treatment Plant

Starting as early as Tuesday, April 2nd, the Harry Tracy Water Treatment Plant project will be conducting four intensive concrete pour activities this month. Exact dates will be posted here on our blog, www.sfwater.org/Peninsula, and will be available by email - peninsula@sfwater.org - and on our 24-hour phone line, (866) 973-1476.

The concrete placement activities will require a large number of concrete trucks to travel along Crystal Springs Road in San Bruno to create the base slab for the new 11 million gallon Treated Water Reservoir. Pilot cars will regulate the speed and number of trucks entering and exiting the plant gate.

Work hours: 7:00am until at least 7:00pm

Long work days are planned to ensure the concrete base slab for each quadrant of the reservoir has adequate time to dry in current weather conditions.

To prepare for this concrete work, the contractor is maintaining a swing shift until 12:00 am on weekdays until further notice. Cranes and forklifts will be operated for the installation of slab reinforcement and seismic cables. Lights may be visible from the work area, but no additional truck traffic is anticipated for this preparation work.

Multiple shifts will continue on Saturdays and Sundays as they have for the past month.

We are making every effort to minimize construction impacts to surrounding neighborhoods.

Our construction crews and environmental monitors assess noise, vibration, dust, and other potential disturbances caused by construction in order to comply with all local, state and federal laws.

We work with the contractor to ensure all diesel trucks, equipment and generators are equipped with Best Available Control Technology for emissions reduction and that idling is minimized near schools and residences.

The contractor will be working extended hours inside the Harry Tracy Water Treatment Plant beginning Saturday, March 9th with work near the gate at Crystal Springs Road and Crestmoor Drive.

Saturday, March 9: 9:00 am to 5:30 pm

Sunday, March 10: 9:00 am to 5:30 pm

Monday-Friday: 7:00 am to 11:30 pm

Cranes and forklifts will be operating for slab reinforcement and seismic cable installation at the new Treated Water Reservoir (TWR). Lights may be visible in the area at night. No additional truck traffic is anticipated at this time.

Weekday evening work will continue to include future TWR construction activity until further notice. The contractor will monitor noise levels to maintain compliance with local ordinances.

The new, seismically strengthened reservoir will allow us to provide up to 140 million gallons of water per day, for 60 days, within 24 hours of a major earthquake.

Intensive Work Necessary to Complete Upgrades through Late April

Construction Update

On Friday, February 15^th, an intensive construction period for electrical and seismic upgrades will begin at the Harry Tracy Water Treatment Plant and regular Plant operations will be temporarily shut down.

During the first month of the shutdown, an extensive overhaul of the electrical system will be performed on the pump station and standby power building close to the Helen Drive gate in Millbrae. Expect more construction activity at this location.

Bird deterrent boxes have recently been placed on site for the nesting season to discourage birds from nesting in construction areas. These may be audible to our closest neighbors.

What to Expect

Work will be most intensive during the first five weeks of the shutdown. Crews will be scheduled in double shifts throughout the week and on weekends. Temporary outdoor lighting will be in place and may be visible to our neighbors on Helen Drive, however night work will primarily be indoors.

Noise levels will comply with all local ordinances. Nonetheless, this work may be disruptive during peak construction periods. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may cause.

Monitoring

Construction crews are actively monitoring noise, vibration, dust, and other potential disturbances caused by construction activities in order to comply with all local, state and federal regulations.

Truck traffic on Crystal Springs Road in San Bruno will continue during normal business hours for delivery of concrete and materials. Pilot cars will escort trucks along the road for safety.

CONSTRUCTION NOTICE: Upcoming Evening and Saturday Work

The contractor will be working extended hours inside the Harry Tracy Water Treatment Plant beginning this Friday, February 8th with work near the gate at Crystal Springs Road and Crestmoor Drive. Lights may be visible in the area during the evenings. No roads will be closed nor will traffic be impacted by this work.

The work includes backfill around a 96” pipe for the new treated water reservoir. Necessary backfill material will be brought in during the week between 9 am and 4 pm.
